Campaign of the Month: March 2014
GD Episode 008
The show opens on a shot of a large mansion somewhere in Gotham. Two Asian men can be seen standing outside chatting and as the camera focuses on them we pick up their conversion, all in Mandarin.
“Where the Dai Lo is going?”, the first one asks.
“Meeting with the Russians.”, comes the reply.
“He should not trust the Russians”, responds the first man.
Then we see a man, with shaggy black hair walking down the steps behind them. He pulls the cigarette from his mouth and says, “He doesn’t. What he trusts is in his hand. What is written in these celestial charts.”
He gestures to the book in his other hand, the cover reads “The T’ung Shu – Book of All Things” He walks over to a car and the first man moves to open the door for him. Ekin Tzu tells him, “I shall be back soon. Protect my wife. I have seen darkness ahead.”
As the car pulls away we see movement in the trees far behind the two men. The camera slides over and we watch another man, swathed in all black with short black hair and nightvision goggles, slip out and screw a silencer onto his pistol. He slips into the mansion and the camera follows him into it’s halls. He makes his way back to the master bedroom where we see Ekin’s wife fast asleep.
The silent click of silenced gunshots break the stillness and holes appear in the bed sheets, the edges quickly staining red. From outside we here a voice, “Wha? Why’s the door open? Come on, man, this isn’t funn…” and the second Asian man from out front pushes his way into the room. Te assassin turns around and smiles, “Tell Ekin Tzu that the Russians say hello.” he says before pistol whipping the living shit out of the guard. Just then Last Chance bursts into the room and throws a wild punch at the assassin. The assassin ducks and cries out, “Who are you?”
“I’m your Last Chance.”, Chance replies.
The man groans and shoots Chance in the leg. Chance crumbles to the ground and the assassin casually walks over to him, pressing the silencer against his temple. “Goodbye.” He says softly.
“Wait…”, Chance yells, “Who are you?”
“There is dissension in the ranks of the Triad. War with the Russians will tear them further apart. The crusade starts tonight and when we are done there will be none left standing in Gotham but us.”
The screen cuts to black and we hear the soft click of the silenced pistol.
In big bold white letters the words, “Gotham Days” appear in the center of the screen. After holding on the screen for a few seconds the episode title fades in below, “The Return of Prince Khufu”.
“You’re too hurt. We can’t now.”, Aisling is heard saying as the scene fades in.
We see Aisling M. Stonehill, dress as Fatale, standing next to Trevor Twelve who’s laying on a sofa in bandages. Trevor scoffs and sips from a glass of red wine on the table.
“It’s not as bad as it looks. We stick to the same plan.”, he says.
“It’s not just museaum security anymore, Trevor. GCPD will be on hand and I’ve heard they are even sending in the Nightbirds to dissuade vigilantism.”
“All the better. Let them all look weak and foolish.”, Trevor then takes a sip of his wine.
“If I’m arrested it’s all over. This heist is simply to let Gotham know we’re here. That it’s too late, that vigilantism is part of Gotham again.”
“And what better audience than GCPD?”
“You could get us both arrested. You’re drunk, Trevor. This isn’t a god damn game.”
“Stop calling me Trevor, I’m Baron fucking Samedi.”
Aisling turns and begins to storm out of the room.
“Fatale! Wait!”, Baron calls after her.
Aisling stops in the doorway and looks back at him, “You have one chance to convince me it’s still worth taking you along or else I’m going this alone. I will have you arrested before you can spoil my plans, Trevor Twelve.”
The show then cuts to Ray Castlemen in the same Italian restaurant we saw him in last week. He is dressed in his fanciest clothing and eating with a woman who’s decidedly not Rumi. The camera swings around and we see that his guest is Amanda Leighton, who smiles and asks Ray, “So… You’ve been quite. Why did you ask me out to dinner?”
Ray looks up from his ravioli and blinks a few times, “Oh. Sorry, I just love the food here. I got distracted.”
Amanda grins and twirls her hair around one finger as she talks, “It’s ok, Ray. It’s nice to see you outside the lab.”
“Yeah, I miss the neutrino mass research STAR was doing but really GothCorp is the place to be. Speaking of which…”, Ray says with a boyish smile.
Amanda’s grin slips to a forced smile, “Wait, you didn’t invite me out to attempt to recruit me… Did you Ray?”
Ray tilts his head slightly, “Well… yeah. Why else?”
Amanda’s smile completely fades and she sets down her fork, “Can we get the check now?”
Ray looks down at his half-eaten dinner, “But…”
Amanda crosses her arms, “I thought you wanted to have dinner with me, Ray. Not your lab assistant.”
“But… You were my lab assistant, and you were a damn good one. I’d like to have you back.”
Amanda mutters something under her breath and Ray asks, “What?”
“As just your lab assistant.”
“Oh. No.”, Ray replies.
For a second Amanda’s smile returns, “Reall… Wait, Ray. As what?”
“A full partner. We need good people like you at GothCorp.”
Amanda’s smile fades again but it doesn’t stop Ray from plodding on.
The dead end of the alley way looms up on Black Fox and she realizes there is nowhere to jump to at this point. Instead of slowing down, she pushes harder and launches herself up the wall. She blackflips around and lands a solid kick across Vigil‘s shoulders. Vigil drops to a knee and cries out but Fox has already landed on her feet and is only two steps from Vigil. With a great bounding stride, she launches herself off Vigil’s knee and plants her own knee into his face. Vigil drops to the ground and Fox darts back towards the mouth of the alley. Before she can get more than a few steps, Vigil kips-up and tackles Fox from behind. The two sprawl down onto the alley floor before scrambling back to their feet. Vigil finds his footing first and before Fox can make a move Vigil’s fist lands a hard blow, cracking her mask. Fox reels back, half in surprise and half in pain. Vigil pushes into the opening with a fast kick but Fox gets her wits back before it can land. She sidesteps the kick and returns the attempt with one of her own. Vigil takes it on his hip, not even attempting to dodge. Vigil throws himself into Fox, something she clearly didn’t anticipate, and slams her into the alley wall. Fox legs dangle a solid foot off the ground as Vigil presses his forearm into her chest, just below her neck. She curses in Japanese.
“Why did you kill Jiao Tzu?”, Vigil demands.
Behind her cracked mask, Fox blinks with surprise, “Ekin Tuz’s wife?”, she asks.
Vigil lets his forearm slide up slightly, chocking Black Fox ever so slightly, “Don’t play coy with me. We both know you were trying to start a civil war in the Lucky Hand. Now Jiao is dead, I smell your hand on the trigger.”
Black Fox coughs as Vigil lets his arm slide back down to simply pinning her, “I had nothing to do with that.”
Vigil glares at Fox, “Then who did. You give me a name or…”
Anger rises up in Fox, “What? Arrest me? Everyone know’s you’re a mascot. No real power.”
Now it’s Vigil’s turn to get angry. He clamps his other hand on Fox’s shoulder and with a sudden jerk launches her across the alleyway. Fox crashes into a garbage can and lands on the concrete ground with a thud. Before she can get to her feet, Vigil’s boot sails at her gut. She tucks into a ball and rolls forward before the boot can find its mark, then she pops to her feet.
“I’m not the bad guy here, Vigil!”
“Why did you attack me then?”, Vigil replies, sounding more hurt than angry now.
“You were chasing me!”
“I wanted to ask you what you knew about Jiao Tzu!”
“You cornered me!”
Vigil clenches his fist again and Fox drops into a low crouch as soon as she notices the posture change.
Outside of the Gotham City Museum large banners hang indicating that tonight is the showing of the Prince Khufu exhibit. The camera pans around to watch Spencer Sterling climb out of a limo and flashbulbs flicker in the night. Reporters call out various questions, Where is his date? What is GothCorp doing? Something about a recent round of lay-offs. Almost as if on cue, a large black man in a dirty jacket and cap steps in front of Spencer.
“Rich trash!”, he yells, jabbing a finger into Spencer’s chest.
“I beg your pardon?”, Spencer replies.
“You heard me, rich boy. All yoru money and you still have me laid off!”, the man leans in closer to Spencer’s face.
“I had no ide…”, Spencer starts but the man cuts him off.
“My family is starving! My own son goes hungry! And people like you run the place like we’re just numbers!”, the man screams.
Just then another voice cuts through the crowd, “Spencer! There you are.”
The voice is softer, female, and quickly its owner makes herself known, “I’ve been looking everywhere for you.”
The woman steps between Spencer and the angry man, taking Spencer by the arm and pulling him towards the Museum. She has shoulder length red hair and her dress’s plunging neckline leaves little to the imagination.
“Uh… Have you?”, Spencer says confused, “Oh, and thanks for the save. Have we met?”
The woman smiles, “We’re about to. You’re the very famous Spencer Sterling. I’m Whisper. Whisper A’Daire.”
“Interesting name… And an interesting accent, you’re English?”, Spencer asks.
“Yes. And as for the name, I had interesting parents.”, Whisper smiles at Spencer as they reach the entry to the Museum. “It seems that I’ve done my good deed for the year, Mr. Sterling. I’ll leave you alone now.”
Spencer turns up his charm, “Let me at least buy you a drink. Gratitude, you understand.”
Whisper is totally unfazed, “I don’t think so, Mr. Sterling. I’ve heard all about you and how you treate the ladies. Pleasure meeting you.”
Whisper then makes her way into the party, leaving Spencer standing perplexed. Under his breath he mutters, “Who is she…?”
